What it does

Convert an everyday measurement between metric and customary units in one place. Choose length, mass, area, or volume, then select the input and output units. The result shows the converted value, your original measurement, and the multiplier. US liquid volume units and international-foot area units are named explicitly to avoid mixing incompatible conventions.

Useful when

  • Convert a walking distance from kilometers to miles.
  • Compare room areas given in square feet and square meters.
  • Convert US liquid gallons to liters for a container capacity.

How to use it

  1. Select length, mass, area, or volume.
  2. Enter a non-negative value and choose its input and output units.
  3. Convert and review the value and conversion factor, then copy or download.

A few useful details

Are gallons and cups US or imperial units?

The volume options are US liquid gallons, US liquid quarts, US customary cups of eight US fluid ounces, and US fluid ounces. They are not imperial units or metric cups. Check the convention on your original measurement before converting.

Which feet, acres, pounds, and ounces are used?

Feet use the international foot, and acres are based on that foot rather than the former US survey foot. Pounds and ounces are avoirdupois mass units, not troy units or fluid ounces.

Can I convert volume directly into mass?

No. Volume-to-mass conversion needs the material’s density. This tool converts within one measurement category and shows up to 12 significant digits, so displayed decimals may be rounded.
