What it does
Compare storage and data quantities without confusing gigabytes with gibibytes. Convert bits, bytes, and decimal or binary multiples through tera and tebi. Every menu names the convention, and the result also gives the equivalent number of bytes and bits. Calculations happen locally and accept fractional quantities for estimates.
Useful when
- Compare a storage capacity in GB with a reading in GiB.
- Translate a byte limit into decimal megabytes or binary mebibytes.
- Convert a quantity given in megabits into megabytes.
How to use it
- Enter a non-negative data quantity.
- Choose the input and output units, checking SI or binary and bits or bytes.
- Convert, then copy or download the result with its equivalent bits and bytes.
A few useful details
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
MB is a decimal megabyte: 1,000,000 bytes. MiB is a binary mebibyte: 1,048,576 bytes. Decimal prefixes multiply by 1,000 at each step; binary prefixes multiply by 1,024.
Are bits and bytes interchangeable?
No. One byte is eight bits. This tool labels byte units with B and bit units with bit, so 8 Mbit converts to 1 MB.
Does this calculate download time or usable disk capacity?
No. It converts a data quantity only. Download time also needs a transfer rate, and usable storage depends on filesystem and device overhead. Fractional outputs are mathematical estimates; stored files have whole-byte sizes.
