What it does

Check a percentage without building a spreadsheet. Find a portion of a number, express a part as a percentage of a total, compare an original and new value, or increase and decrease a number by a chosen percentage. The result includes the formula so you can verify which values were used before copying or downloading it.

Useful when

  • Calculate how much of an event capacity has been booked.
  • Compare a new attendance count with an earlier count.
  • Scale a quantity up or down by a known percentage.

How to use it

  1. Choose the percentage operation that matches your question.
  2. Enter the two decimal values using the labels for that operation.
  3. Calculate, review the formula, and copy or download the result.

A few useful details

How is percentage change calculated?

The calculation is (new value − original value) ÷ original value × 100. This mode requires a positive original value to keep increase and decrease unambiguous. A negative result means the new value is lower.

Can I calculate a percentage of zero?

Yes, a percentage of zero is zero. Finding what percentage a part represents requires a non-zero total, and percentage change cannot use a zero original value.

Can percentages be greater than 100?

Yes. For example, 150% of 20 is 30. Increasing 20 by 150% gives 50. Decreasing by more than 100% produces a negative result. Results display up to 12 significant digits.
