What it does
Generate a SHA-256 fingerprint for a link in a script, import, or comparison. The default URL mode normalises a valid address before hashing; Exact text mode uses the text exactly as entered. The calculation runs in your browser, and links to the same page can still produce different hashes.
Useful when
- Create a repeatable identifier for an imported link.
- Compare normalised URLs, or choose Exact text to distinguish every character.
- Prepare keys for a small local script or dataset.
How to use it
- Paste the URL or text you want to fingerprint.
- Choose URL mode for a normalised address or Exact text to preserve every character, then generate its hash.
- Copy the result and use the same input rules when comparing it later.
A few useful details
Is this the same as the #fragment at the end of a URL?
No. This produces a fingerprint from text. A URL fragment identifies a section or state inside a page.
Will two URLs for the same page have the same hash?
Not necessarily. URL mode normalises the address format, but a different query order, fragment, or path can still change the hash. Exact text mode also preserves differences in spelling and whitespace. Use the same mode for both inputs.
Does hashing make a private link safe to publish?
Do not rely on it for secrecy. Predictable URLs can be guessed and hashed for comparison. This tool is not encryption or a password-storage system.
